Legal leaders at companies including Hyatt Hotels, Amazon and TransUnion were among the winners at the US In-House Counsel Celebration, hosted last month by Mondaq and Legal 500 in affiliation with the American Bar Association (ABA).
Eight community-nominated individuals and teams picked up awards for their significant contributions to the US in-house community, at an event hosted by Canadian comedian and actress Jessica Holmes at The Langham Hotel in Chicago on 20 May
The event follows Legal 500’s acquisition of Mondaq last year, a deal which combined Legal 500’s data-driven benchmarking capabilities with Mondaq’s legal, tax and regulatory knowledge sharing platform.
The evening kicked off with a fireside chat featuring Dechert’s global IP co-chair Tina Martini, Executives’ Club of Chicago CEO Dorri McWhorter, Avison Young chief legal officer Nicole White and Amy Yeung, head of ads, legal, at PayPal and hosted by Jan Anne Dubin, CEO of Jan Anne Dubin Consulting.
The group discussed the key topics facing legal leaders as the industry grapples with the rapid development of AI and adapts to a shifting geopolitical landscape.
ABA president Michelle Behnke delivered a speech to the guests on the importance of an independent legal profession and the role in-house leaders play in this.
The awards began with Female In-House Trailblazer of the Year, which went to Stephanie Adams, senior corporate counsel at US paints company Sherwin-Williams, for her efforts to provide opportunities to women and minorities in the legal profession.
Next, Sara Hall, chief legal officer of the American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities, picked up the award for Employee Wellness Initiative of the Year.
The Transition to Business award went to Jessica Edgerton, CLO at LeadingRE, while Alex Nguyen, AI product counsel at Amazon, was named In-House Counsel ‘Up and Comer’.
The Action in Diversity & Inclusion award went to Mariana D’Andrea, associate GC of business and legal affairs at streaming devices company Roku, while Hyatt Hotels GC Margaret Egan was named In-House Legal Leader of the Year.
Insurance company Westfield received the award for Legal Team of the Year, while the Outstanding Contribution award went to TransUnion CLO Heather Russell.

In-House Counsel Up and Comer: Alex Nguyen, corporate counsel, artificial general intelligence, Amazon
Alex is a successful legal strategist and problem-solver in a cutting-edge field, who also demonstrates a bias towards mentorship, operational efficiency, and knowledge scaling. Alex is the lead legal strategist for a family of AI foundation models, managing the legal architecture for upstream development. In this role, he has developed strategies to navigate complex copyright, data and privacy laws and created “Responsible AI” governance frameworks. His legal career, which included a prior role as Enterprise Licensing Counsel at Adobe, reflects his development from commercial execution to strategic counseling and innovation. His vision for process streamlining and strategic, systemic risk management extends to his peers, with a “lift as you climb” approach that empowers colleagues through mentorship and standardised knowledge
transfer tools.
Female Trailblazer of the Year: Stephanie Adams, senior corporate counsel, Sherwin-Williams
Since joining Sherwin-Williams, a Fortune 200 company, as the litigation department’s only female lawyer, Stephanie Adams established new processes and procedures to streamline the company’s litigation and claims management process, while creating an inclusive environment for more female lawyers. Through not only her work for her company, but also through her leadership in nonprofit and professional organisations, pro bono activities, and as an inspirational speaker and mentor, Stephanie lives her commitment to increasing opportunities for women and other under-represented groups in the legal profession.
Action in Diversity & Inclusion Award: Mariana D’Andrea, associate GC – International, Roku
Mariana has demonstrated a rare ability to operate simultaneously as a senior strategic dealmaker, institutional leader, and values-driven architect of inclusive legal systems. In addition to being a strategic and innovative counsel in complex, high-impact international licensing and distribution deals, Mariana has demonstrated her deep commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in her company and the profession. She founded and chaired the company’s pro bono programme, and leads employee resource groups and mentorship initiatives within Roku. She also regularly collaborates with affinity organisations, pro bono partners and professional networks to strengthen pipelines for under-represented groups to the legal profession, and promote leadership development for diverse lawyers.
Employee Wellness Initiative of the Year Award: Sara Hall, chief legal officer, American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities (ALSAC)
As Chief Legal officer of ALSAC, the nonprofit fundraising arm for St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Sara has championed a department-wide culture shift making well-being a priority rather than an afterthought. She brought in outside professionals to teach science-backed techniques for stress management, including meditation and breathwork. She followed up by providing tools to help department members incorporate such stress-management techniques into their daily routines, with the use of technology apps and peer support. Sara’s leadership and work reflect her
recognition of the connection between individual wellbeing and teamwork, productivity, and long-term sustainability.
In-House Legal Leader of the Year: Margaret Egan, GC, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts
In 2025, during a period of accelerated organisational growth and strategic refinement, Margaret integrated the legal, communications, social responsibility, risk and corporate affairs functions into a unified Corporate Affairs & Legal Team. This structural integration strengthened accountability, improved global alignment and facilitated more consistent and scalable decision-making. Within the Hyatt legal organisation, Margaret has developed a team whose members are known for their collaborative, and business-oriented approach to legal and strategic issues. The breadth of her responsibilities and influence, including the Hyatt Hotels Foundation, extend well beyond legal oversight to include enterprise stewardship, culture and strategies, providing strong foundations to support the organisation’s continued growth and development. Margaret’s influence is also felt through her community and civic leadership, including in industry forums, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Anti-Defamation League Midwest, and Sarah’s Circle, which provides shelter and support for women affected by homelessness.
Transition to Business Award: Jessica Edgerton, chief legal officer, Leading Real Estate Companies of the World (LeadingRE)
Within her organisation, a global network of approximately 550 independently owned real estate brokerage firms in more than 70 countries in multiple roles, Jessica is responsible for distinct legal and business functions. In addition to the provision of legal services and enterprise risk management, Jessica also leads the organisation’s training and professional development function, overseeing learning strategy and content development to support brokerage owners, executives and agents. She hosts regular topical programming for members on economic and risk issues, and is a frequent keynote speaker for industry conferences and executive forums. In addition, Jessica serves as LeadingRe’s head of industry outreach, managing relationships with real estate associations and other industry networks, and oversees the organisation’s preferred vendor department, consistent with member needs, risk considerations, and strategic priorities. Jessica moves fluidly between her legal and business roles, and is recognised by her organisation’s members and industry leaders as a thought leader and influential industry strategist, legal analyst, and educator.
Legal Team of the Year: Westfield
In 2025, the Westfield Enterprise Legal Team supported their company through an unprecedented level of change, as this 175-year-old company transitioned from a mutual insurance company to a large international insurance carrier and holding company . The company’s transformation, which
included expansion into three new countries, creation of ten new legal entities, and the launch of multiple new insurance lines across the US, more than doubled the regulatory regimes the Legal Team was required to manage, and required an almost complete restructuring of the company’s corporate structure. In addition to efficiently managing new and complex corporate and regulatory structures, the Team implemented a centralised matter-management platform and standardised process for legal risk management, while reducing outside legal spend by over 10%. Throughout this time of fundamental change and broad business growth, the legal team functioned as a strong and reliable business partner, supporting the company through a principled, predictable and business-oriented approach.
Outstanding Contribution Award: Heather Russell, chief legal officer, TransUnion
Heather leads TransUnion’s integrated Legal, Risk, and Compliance (LRC) functions, aligning legal strategy with enterprise growth, innovation and consumer trust, and positioning LRC as an effective business partner. In the past year, she provided steady, values-driven leadership during a period of significant regulatory and policy uncertainty and litigation risk. Her ability to lead through complexity and assess risk levels and root causes allowed the company to navigate through ambiguity while maintaining ethical standards and a commitment to consumer protection. Heather’s leadership and influence extend throughout the industry and Chicago’s civic and business communities, including through her service on the Board of Directors of the US Chamber of Commerce, the Chicago Counsel on Global Affairs, and Illinois Legal Aid Online, as Chair of the Board of the Consumer Data Industry Association, and as a member of The Chicago Network, promoting women leaders and executive leadership across the Chicago area.
