American players dominated City recruitment last week as Goodwin Procter appointed a real estate partner, Mayer Brown made two hires to its banking & finance practice and Locke Lord recruited to its energy practice.

Goodwin has appointed real estate investment funds partner Justin Cornelius in London. He joined from Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner where he was leader of funds and investment management. He focuses on the establishment and operation of unlisted pooled investment funds, private equity funds and joint ventures. City hires picked up pace again last week after a fallow patch as leading firms made prominent additions to a number of key practice areas. Squire Patton Boggs hired to its private equity practice while Bird & Bird and Addleshaw Goddard strengthened their real estate benches.

Squires added to its global corporate practice in London with the hire of Stephen Ball. He joined the firm’s international private equity team as a partner from KPMG where he served as chief executive and vice chairman. Ball advises on financial services, risk, strategy and corporate governance for global banks, companies, private equity firms, hedge funds and governments. Goodwin secured a prominent hire to its private equity group, recruiting CMS’ private equity head James Grimwood to its London office. Grimwood has experience in advising on M&A, joint ventures and corporate reorganisations. He has acted on private equity transactions for institutions and management teams. The City lateral recruitment market is struggling to return to pre-Christmas activity levels, with only two firms making notable partner hires. Crowell & Moring has revisited Squire Patton Boggs for another partner hire while Addleshaw Goodard has appointed Linklaters’ real estate disputes head as partner.

Crowell & Moring continues to make prominent hires to its London office, most recently recruiting partner Nicola Phillips to its international dispute resolution group. Phillips has experience in asset-based lending, trade finance, insurance, and employment-related disputes. She has also worked on cross-border investigations in Europe and the Middle East as well as complex civil fraud cases.
