Two weeks ago, Labour pledged to tax as income the performance fees (known as the ‘carried interest’) paid to certain investment managers. This rather than the much lower capital gains tax rate enjoyed hitherto. The pledge followed Labour’s promise, earlier in the week, to remove the centuries old non-dom tax break and, last month, to restrict pension tax relief for high earners.

Despite the spate of large scale settlements banks continue to set aside large provisions for legal spend with the latest, Barclays, setting aside £800m for investigations and litigation primarily relating to foreign exchange manipulation while Deutsche Bank put aside €1.5bn in the first quarter of 2015.
Joining the spate of firms to bolster their offering in Singapore in recent months, Nabarro has today (30 April) announced the appointment of senior disputes partner Steven Lim, the founder and managing director of Clyde & Co’s joint venture partner Clasis, to head its Singapore office.

Bankruptcy pioneer Harvey Miller, one of America’s leading commercial lawyers of the post-War period, has died at the age of 82, it was announced this week.
The Weil Gotshal & Manges partner was America’s most prominent bankruptcy practitioner, playing a pivotal role in a string of landmark cases, including the wind-up of Lehman Brothers, the largest corporate bankruptcy in US history.

In a sign that the Magic Circle firm has renewed confidence in its traditional M&A stronghold, Linklaters has promoted nine corporate lawyers to the partnership, nearly 40% of the 23-strong round, spread across the City, Shanghai and its European offices.
Following a round of redundancies last year which saw 33 roles cut, Ince & Co is restructuring its partnership and support staff with six partners and ten secretarial staff set to depart.

Norton Rose Fulbright (NRF) has today (27 April) announced a total of 51 lawyers were made up to partner across the US, Canada Europe, Asia and Africa in what constitutes its largest promotions round since its 2013 combination.
The Law Society today (27 April 2015) published its Annual Statistics Report 2014, showing that while the number of solicitors rose, returning to growth in 2014 after dipping in 2013, and those graduating with a law degree reached record highs, the number of training contracts continued to fall.
King & Wood Mallesons real estate team hire from Eversheds may have made the headlines last week, but there were plenty of notable hires elsewhere. Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) bolstered its Frankfurt office which it launched in 2013 with a finance partner from K&L Gates while Bird & Bird welcomed a new partner in Denmark and Ogier added to its dispute resolution team in the Cayman Islands with a hire from Kirkland & Ellis’ London office.
