The Law Society and The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) have launched a consultation on a proposed 4% cut from the practising certificate (PC) fee this year, proposing an individual rate of £278 per solicitor for the year 2017-18.

Ashurst has improved its revenues by 7%, following last year’s disappointing financial results, with an 11% boost to its profits per equity partner (PEP).
A steady pace of lateral hires continued into the second half of 2017, with Squire Patton Boggs and Addleshaw Goddard both taking on partners in the UK, Taylor Wessing in France and Goodwin Procter in Boston.
The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT) has struck off former Clyde & Co senior associate Rajpal Ahluwalia from the solicitor’s roll and ordered him to pay over £41,000 in costs after a series of failures starting in 2013 when he omitted to file a defence in a client’s case.
More than 700 new European laws have been introduced into UK statute since the EU Referendum vote in June 2016, with a further 1,260 expected to be absorbed by the time of UK’s departure in March 2019.

Taylor Wessing has posted a modest 1.8% increase in its UK revenue to £128.9m in 2016/2017, in contrast to a 4.4% rise the previous year. It was brighter news, however, for the firm’s global revenues which rose 6% to £269.8m, up from £254.5m in 2015.
