Only the most outstanding law firms over 2019 made the shortlist in this, our most prestigious award. Judges were looking for a firm that took the market by storm and achieved more than their direct competitors and peers. Achievements may include – but are not limited to – the successful development of new practice areas, expansion into new international or domestic markets, new client wins, the completion of a strategic merger or acquisition, improved financial performance, or a successful recruitment policy. We now come to the penultimate award of our 2020 Legal Business Awards season and we are delighted to reveal our Management Partner of the Year.

The winner of this award is a UK-based managing partner, senior partner, head of chambers, chief executive or chief operating officer who truly led the way for their business in 2019. Relentless as ever: Kirkland surpasses own record to promote 145 new partners and 16 in London

 In characteristic ‘retrenchment be damned’ fashion, Kirkland & Ellis has beaten its own record for the number of partners it promotes, making up 145 globally and 16 in the City. 

The move sees the world’s highest-grossing law firm continue its striking ascent even in the face of coronavirus uncertainty to add four to last year’s 141-strong total, of which 16 were in London. Legal Business Awards 2020 – US Law Firm of the Year

The entries have been assessed and our research completed: we are now delighted to reveal our US Law Firm of the Year for the 2020 Legal Business Awards.

This award highlights the US firm that has made the greatest progress over the past year in advancing its strategy, improving financial performance and winning instructions, particularly in the City. A large international presence is not a prerequisite for consideration for this award, although the judges will be looking for strong evidence of success in those foreign markets where the firm has offices.

Revolving doors: tech hires dominate a busy week in the lateral recruitment market

The past week has seen a number of interesting hires of senior technology specialists at leading firms, as well as the recruitment of former cabinet ministers as special advisers. 

Clifford Chance (CC) made a significant move, hiring a new partner to its tech group – part of the global corporate practice – in London. The firm has hired Simon Persoff from DLA Piper, where he acted as a senior consultant advising on data protection, privacy, cyber security and banking secrecy issues. Burges Salmon rides out Covid crisis to break £100m revenue threshold

Burges Salmon has become the latest firm to defy market uncertainty in the face of the coronavirus pandemic as it posted double-digit revenue growth to pass the £100m turnover milestone for the first time.

A strong set of 2019/20 results for the Bristol-based firm saw revenue grow 11% from £94.6m to £104.9m as operating profit increased by a comparable 11%. Skadden doubles down on City recruitment drive with hire of Freshfields star Embley

Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom has hired one of the most well-known M&A partners in the City, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer veteran Bruce Embley.

Goodwin’s already eye-catching City office has pulled off another coup, attracting the storied Sidley Austin private equity team led by Erik Dahl and Christian Iwasko.

Glass ceiling finally shattered for Magic Circle as Freshfields elects female senior partner

While the upper echelon of City law has seen senior female leaders before in Penelope Warne at CMS, Sonya Leydecker at Herbert Smith and Lovells’ Lesley McDonagh before them, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has beaten Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance and Linklaters to the punch by electing the first-ever woman to a top leadership role in the Magic Circle. The firm today (24 September) announced it has elected Asia disputes head Georgia Dawson as its new senior partner.

Australia yields two new board members for Ashurst as Davies gets re-elected in London

Ashurst has elected two new board members from its corporate partner ranks in Sydney and Melbourne while respected dealmaker Karen Davies has been reappointed in London.

The move, which takes effect on 1 November, sees Sydney corporate partner Phil Breden and Melbourne corporate partner Kylie Lane elevated as Davies, who has been on the board since 2017, is re-enlisted for a further stint. Revolving doors: CC fertile hunting ground for Simpson Thacher as Mishcon loses two disputes partners in a week

Lateral hires are not commonplace for Simpson Thacher & Bartlett but when it does in London, Clifford Chance is often the firm to lose out. The firm that hired Adam Signy, Jason Glover and Amy Mahon from CC has once again hired from the Magic Circle player, this time adding financial regulation specialist Owen Lysak. 

Lysak advises private funds, asset managers and financial institutions on UK and EU financial market regulations and transactions, including in relation to AIFMD, MiFID II and MiFIR. He counsels market participants on regulatory capital requirements and securities regulation, on markets abuse regulations, and on issues related to Brexit and the financial crisis regulatory response. He also advises on the regulatory aspects of M&A and restructurings within the financial sector.
