Cleary Gottlieb has promoted 15 lawyers to partner, effective 1 January 2027, down from last year’s class of 20.

The largest share of promotions again came in the US, where the firm made up nine new partners, including four in its New York head office. Washington DC followed closely with three, while the firm also made up two new partners in California.

The California promotions of capital market lawyer Natalai Rezai and M&A lawyer Pierre Allegaert mark the firm’s first on the West Coast since launching in San Francisco and Silicon Valley in 2021.

Last year’s US promotions included seven each in New York and Washington DC.

In London, antitrust lawyer Lanto Sheridan was the sole partner promotion, down from two last year.

In Europe, Brussels and Rome each saw two promotions, up from one and none respectively last year. Milan, meanwhile, saw one, down from two last year.

By practice area, M&A and antitrust accounted for more than half of the promotions, with four each. The remaining appointments spanned capital markets, global funds, IP, technology and data, real estate, international trade and national security, and litigation and arbitration.

Managing partner Jeff Karpf said: ‘These talented lawyers advise our clients on their most complex and commercially important business matters and represent the excellence and ambition of our firm.’

The promotions bring the firm’s worldwide partnership to 257.
