Dwindling partner promotions at A&O and Freshfields fail to maintain current partnership levels

The UK’s elite law firms often point to their rigorous partnership promotion process as a natural selector of the best talent but at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Allen & Overy (A&O) the promotion of just 15 and 16 partners respectively in recent weeks is insufficient even to maintain the partnerships at their current levels.

For Freshfields, the latest promotions round is a marginal increase on the 14 promoted in 2013, but is a significant decline when compared with the 20 partners promoted in 2011 and 2012.

Numbers game – Freshfields awards 15 partner promotions across Europe, Tokyo and New York

In the latest round of partnership promotions, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has made up 15 new partners to its ranks. While that figure does not represent a return to 2011 and 2012 levels, when 20 partners were made up, it is a slight increase on last year, when the number fell to 14. New Year, new job: Hogan Lovells boosts global partnership by 29 in latest promotion round

Hogan Lovells has increased the number promoted to partnership this year to 29, of which 11 made the cut in its City office.

Effective since 1 January, the promotions are spread throughout multiple practice areas, including disputes (7), corporate (7), finance (5), government regulatory (5), and intellectual property (5) – equating to 13 promotions in Europe across Frankfurt, London and Paris; 15 in the US across Denver, Houston, New York, and Washington DC; and one in Asia in Beijing.

Quinn makes record number of promotions as US firms announce partner elections

US firms have begun to announce their partnership promotions with Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan making the largest number of partner promotions in the firm’s history, while Sidley Austin, Bingham McCutchen and Dechert all announced a decrease in associates to be made up on 1 January.

Quinn Emanuel announced today (13 December 2013) it is appointing 13 new partners in the firm’s largest promotion round yet. For the last three years, the firm has steadily increased its number of partner promotions with 10 new partner elections in 2012, up from eight in 2011 and seven the year before.

71 new shareholders and a Madrid chief – today on Baker Mac’s intranet

It says something about the evolution of the legal market when a single global law firm makes up more partners annually than the total partnership of a sizeable UK practice like Travers Smith but a handful of players are now in that camp.

Passing that threshold with ease is Baker & McKenzie, which has just promoted 71 partners globally as the firm also today (1 July) announced that leading arbitrator Jose Maria Alonso will take over as managing partner of its Madrid practice just over a year after he joined from Garrigues. DLA and Simmons promote fewer partners as firms continue to favour Europe

DLA Piper and Simmons & Simmons are among the latest UK firms to announce a reduced number of partnership promotions, appointing 34 and seven lawyers respectively, down from 58 and 10 in 2012.

DLA’s appointments came largely across its US offices, where 19 lawyers were made up to the partnership, with a further seven in continental Europe, four in the UK and four in Australia.
