Partner promotions: CC appoints 24 to its partnership, including six in London

Clifford Chance (CC) has appointed 24 new partners globally, with promotions across the US, Asia Pacific, continental Europe and six in London.

The new partners cover a wide range of practice areas such as capital markets, corporate, finance, litigation and real estate. These are based across CC’s offices in New York, Madrid, Warsaw, Frankfurt, Brussels, Barcelona, Paris and Perth. They take effect from 1 May 2017 and will bring the total number of partners at CC to 594.

The latest round matches last year’s number of promotions, however the firm promoted three fewer in London. This year in London the promotions are across three practice areas: corporate, finance and real estate. This year’s round includes four women, or 16% of promotions. Over five years the percentage of women in the partnership has risen from 15% (2012) to 19% (2017).

In its release, the firm also adds that aside from their respective practice area specialisms, the new partners also have expertise across areas of increasing importance to clients such as cyber security, fintech and alternative financing.

Commenting on the appointments, CC managing partner Matthew Layton said: ‘These partners are already widely recognised by clients and the market for the quality of their insight and judgment, and respected by colleagues for their substantial contributions to the life of the firm. I am delighted to welcome them to the partnership and look forward to working alongside them as their careers go from strength to strength.’

Other Magic Circle firms to have reported their partner promotions most recently are Allen & Overy (A&O) and Linklaters. A&O has made up 10 partners in London with banking, international capital markets and corporate each seeing three promotions in the City in an increased global round of 24.

Meanwhile, Linklaters promoted 26 new lawyers to its partnership, increasing the size of its promotions round for the fourth year in a row. The firm made up eight new partners in its Silk Street headquarters. The remaining European split has seen four made up in Germany, with three in Frankfurt and one in Munich, three made up in Paris and one a piece in Warsaw, Lisbon, Luxembourg and Amsterdam.
