Revolving doors: Global 100 firms reinforce in Manchester as Euro Elite player makes key lateral hires

UK regional moves were on the cards for Global 100 firms Squire Patton Boggs and Eversheds last week, while Iberian Euro Elite firm Gómez-Acebo & Pombo has hired senior figures from a local rival.

Squire Patton Boggs has strengthened its Manchester office by hiring partner Elizabeth Graham, who joins from Brabners, where she headed up the pensions team. The firm had previously lost three lawyers from the regional office to Eversheds earlier this year.

Squire global head of pensions Catherine McKenna said: ‘Liz’s technical skills and sector knowledge are reinforced by an exemplary understanding of the market in the North West and the national pensions industry.’

Also in Manchester, Eversheds has made a lateral hire from Clyde & Co, appointing employment law partner Mark Hammerton.

Meanwhile, former Trowers & Hamlins head of private wealth Simon Goldring has joined McDermott Will & Emery as a partner in its London office. Goldring brings 25 years’ experience in domestic and international private wealth, advising high-net-worth clients, families and entrepreneurs.

McDermott global private client head Carol Harrington said Goldring would help contribute to growth in the firm’s centre for international private client work, which would ‘provide an excellent platform for his impressive portfolio of international clients’.

In Europe, one Spanish member of our recently published Euro Elite has added experienced hands to its Portuguese practice. Gómez-Acebo & Pombo has hired Miguel Castro Pereira and Miguel de Avillez Pereira in Lisbon. Castra Pereira was managing partner of Portuguese firm Abreu Advogados between 2011 and 2014 and is an experienced banking and finance lawyer, while de Avillez Pereira was the partner in charge of Abreu’s corporate practice until 2015. Gómez-Acebo managing partner, Carlos Rueda, said: ‘Having two such prestigious partners…undoubtedly strengthens our position in the Portuguese market’.

Finally, significant in-house moves announced last week include Jupiter Asset Management appointing Jasveer Singh as general counsel. Singh joins after spending 12 years at Man Group, the largest listed hedge fund in the world. Featured in the GC Powerlist, Singh is described as ‘a terrific deal lawyer who likes to get stuck into negotiations’.
