Firms miss a PR trick by declaring first-half figures

Macfarlanes’ former senior partner, Robert Sutton, once told me that he thought the legal press was a bad idea, as it had forced partnerships to focus on their financials to the detriment of everything else. On this basis, Sutton would only allow broad ‘guidance’ as to the firm’s performance, and even this was offered grudgingly (and usually behind a cloud of thick cigar smoke). Sutton was, of course, a minority voice as the overwhelming majority of UK firms rightly embraced year-end transparency.
